Ovulation is the brief window each cycle when conception is possible, and timing intercourse around it is the single biggest lever for trying to conceive. This tool estimates your ovulation day and the fertile window from your cycle.
How it works
Ovulation is estimated 14 days before the next period (cycle length minus 14 from the last period); the fertile window covers the ~5 days leading up to it.
It estimates ovulation as 14 days before your next period — that is, cycle length minus 14 days from your last period's start. The fertile window then spans roughly the five days before ovulation through the day after.
The five-day lead matters because sperm can survive several days in the reproductive tract, so intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in conception. The egg itself is viable for only about 12-24 hours.
Ovulation day = first day of last period + (cycle length − 14). Fertile window ≈ 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after.
Worked examples
A 28-day cycle starting January 1. → Ovulation around January 15; fertile window roughly January 10-16.
Jan 1 + (28 − 14) = Jan 15; window spans the five days before it.
A 32-day cycle starting January 1. → Ovulation around January 19.
Jan 1 + (32 − 14) = Jan 19.
Tips & gotchas
- For the best odds, aim for intercourse in the two to three days leading up to ovulation, not just the day itself.
- Confirm timing with ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking, especially if cycles vary.
- Track several cycles to learn your true average length — the calendar method is least reliable with irregular cycles.
- Stress, travel, and illness can delay ovulation, so treat the predicted day as an estimate and watch your body's signs.
FAQ
Why is the fertile window several days, not just one?
Sperm can survive up to about five days inside the body, so intercourse in the days before ovulation can still lead to conception. That's why the window stretches before the ovulation day.
How accurate is the calendar method?
It works reasonably for regular cycles but loses accuracy when cycle length varies. Combining it with ovulation kits or temperature tracking sharpens the prediction considerably.
Can I use this to avoid pregnancy?
Calendar-based estimation is not a reliable form of contraception on its own, since ovulation timing shifts. For preventing pregnancy, use a proven method rather than this estimate.
