This answers the everyday question "what percent of the whole is this piece?" — turning a part and a total into a clean percentage. It's the math behind grades, budgets, market share, survey results, and progress bars.
How it works
Percent of total = part ÷ total × 100.
A percentage is just a fraction scaled to a base of 100. You divide the part by the total to get the fraction it represents, then multiply by 100 to express that fraction as a percent. The remainder — total minus part — tells you how much of the whole is left over.
The part doesn't have to be smaller than the total. If the part exceeds the total, you simply get a percentage above 100%, which is exactly what you want when measuring growth or overachievement against a baseline.
Percent of total = (Part ÷ Total) × 100. Remainder = Total − Part.
Worked examples
45 out of a total of 180. → 25.00% of the total (remainder 135)
45 ÷ 180 = 0.25, and 0.25 × 100 = 25%. The remainder is 180 − 45 = 135.
27 completed tasks out of a planned 300. → 9.00% of the total (remainder 273)
27 ÷ 300 = 0.09, so 9%. The remaining work is 300 − 27 = 273 tasks.
Tips & gotchas
- Keep "part of a total" separate from "percent change": this tool measures a slice of a whole, not how much a value grew or shrank between two points.
- If your total is zero, the percentage is undefined — you can't take a fraction of nothing.
- A result above 100% isn't an error; it just means the part is larger than the total, which is normal for growth comparisons.
- To go the other way and find the part from a known percentage, multiply the total by the percentage and divide by 100.

What if the part is larger than the total?
You get a percentage over 100%. That's valid and useful when the "total" is a baseline or target you've exceeded.
How is this different from percentage change?
Percent of total compares one number to a whole. Percentage change compares a new value to an old one and measures the increase or decrease between them.
What does the remainder tell me?
It's the portion of the total that isn't accounted for by the part — total minus part — which is handy for tracking what's left.
