DIY at your own risk. Calcora's calculators and guides are general estimates and information only — not professional, engineering, legal, or safety advice. Always verify local building codes and permit requirements, and hire a licensed pro for electrical, gas, plumbing, structural, or any work you're not fully comfortable doing yourself.
Sticker prices rarely include sales tax, so the amount that actually leaves your wallet is higher than the tag. This adds the tax to any price and shows the real total.
How it works
Multiply the amount by the tax rate, then add it back to the price.
The math is a single multiplication — the amount times the tax rate gives the tax, which is added back to the price. Rates vary widely by state and even by city or county, so the rate you enter should be your local combined rate, not just the state figure.
A handful of states levy no statewide sales tax at all, while others stack state, county, and city taxes into combined rates that can exceed 9–10%. On a large purchase, that difference is significant.
Tax = amount × tax rate; Total = amount + tax
Worked examples
$100 purchase at 8.25% tax → $108.25 total, $8.25 tax
$100 × 8.25% = $8.25 in tax, bringing the total to $108.25.
$1,500 purchase at 6% tax → $1,590.00 total, $90.00 tax
$1,500 × 6% = $90 of tax added to the price.
Tips & gotchas
- Use your combined local rate — state plus county plus city — not just the state rate, since municipalities frequently add their own percentage.
- Some categories are exempt or taxed differently; many states don't tax groceries or prescription drugs, and clothing rules vary by state.
- For big-ticket items, the tax difference between neighboring jurisdictions can outweigh a small price difference — worth checking before you buy.
- To work backwards from a tax-included total, divide by (1 + rate); for example, a $108.25 total at 8.25% means a $100 pre-tax price.
FAQ
Which states have no sales tax?
A small group of states levy no statewide general sales tax, though some still allow local taxes. Rates change, so confirm your jurisdiction's current combined rate.
How do I find my exact rate?
Your combined rate is the sum of state, county, city, and any special-district taxes. Your state's department of revenue publishes a lookup by address or ZIP code.
Is online shopping taxed?
Generally yes. Following recent law changes, most online retailers collect sales tax based on your shipping address, so enter your local rate.
