How it works

Tipping norms vary by service type: full table service typically draws 18–20%, while counter service, delivery, and personal services follow their own conventions. The percentage field lets you match whatever's appropriate.

Worked examples
$60 bill, 18% tip, split between 2 → $70.80 total, $35.40 per person
Tip is $60 × 18% = $10.80, so the total is $70.80, halved to $35.40 each.
$120 bill, 20% tip, split between 4 → $144.00 total, $36.00 per person
A $24 tip brings the total to $144, divided four ways for an even $36 apiece.
Tips & gotchas
- For fast mental math at 20%, move the decimal one place left and double it — 10% of $60 is $6, so 20% is $12.
- Tip on the pre-tax amount when the check shows tax separately; this tool uses whatever bill figure you enter, so enter the pre-tax total if you want to be precise.
- When splitting, round the per-person figure up to the nearest dollar so the pooled cash actually covers the bill.
- Reward genuinely great service by nudging the percentage up rather than leaving a flat extra amount — it scales fairly with the check size.
