A car's 0–60 mph time is the classic shorthand for acceleration, and it's driven mostly by one ratio: how much power the engine makes per pound it has to move. This estimator gives a quick ballpark from horsepower and curb weight alone.

How it works

Estimates 0-60 from the power-to-weight ratio (about 1.6 × sqrt(weight ÷ horsepower)). Real times vary with traction and gearing.

Power-to-weight is the dominant factor in straight-line acceleration, so a rough 0–60 can be approximated from the square root of weight divided by horsepower. The square root captures how doubling power doesn't halve the time — diminishing returns set in as cars get faster.

This is deliberately a rough model. Real 0–60 times depend heavily on traction, tire grip, gearing, drivetrain layout, and launch technique. A high-horsepower rear-drive car can spin its tires and post a worse time than the math predicts, while all-wheel drive often beats it.

Estimated 0–60 (seconds) ≈ 1.6 × √(curb weight ÷ horsepower). Power-to-weight = horsepower ÷ weight × 1,000 (hp per 1,000 lb).

Why does my car's published 0–60 differ from this estimate?

Manufacturers use ideal conditions, prepped surfaces, and expert launches, and their drivetrain and gearing are tuned for the run. This formula only knows power and weight, so it lands close but not exact.

Does torque matter more than horsepower for 0–60?

Torque governs how hard you accelerate at low speed, while horsepower (torque × RPM) determines top-end pull. For a 0–60 sprint both matter; this estimate uses horsepower as a practical stand-in for overall capability.

How much does weight really affect acceleration?

A lot. Because the time scales with the square root of weight, cutting weight by 10% shaves roughly 5% off the estimated time — which is why lightweight sports cars feel quick even without huge power.
