The attic is usually the highest-payback insulation project in a house — heat rises and escapes there first, so adding insulation pays back fast in lower heating and cooling bills. The mistake people make is dumping insulation on top of a leaky attic floor; air sealing first is what makes the insulation actually work. Done in order — seal, protect the airflow, then insulate to the target R-value for your climate — it's a doable one-day job.

Steps
Gear up and assess
Wear a respirator, goggles, and covered skin — insulation fibers irritate. Check the existing depth and condition, and note any signs of moisture or roof leaks to fix before you add insulation.
Air-seal the attic floor
Seal the leaks where warm air escapes: around plumbing and wiring penetrations, the top plates, recessed-light housings (use fire-rated covers), and the attic hatch. Caulk small gaps and foam larger ones.
Install rafter baffles
Staple baffles into the rafter bays at the eaves so soffit vents stay open. Burying the vents kills attic airflow and invites moisture and ice dams.
Mark your target depth
Calculate the R-value your climate needs (often R-49 to R-60 for cold-climate attics) and mark that depth on the rafters or a few stakes so you fill evenly to height.
Lay the first layer in the joist bays
Cut batts to length and lay them snug between the joists with no gaps or compression — compressed insulation loses R-value. Cut neatly around obstacles rather than forcing the batt over them.
Add a perpendicular top layer
If you need more R-value, run a second unfaced layer perpendicular across the joists. This covers the joists themselves, which otherwise act as thermal bridges that leak heat.
Insulate the hatch and check coverage
Insulate and weatherstrip the attic hatch — a bare hatch is a big hole in your work. Walk the perimeter to confirm even depth all the way to the eaves baffles.

- Air-seal before you insulate, always. Insulation slows heat but doesn't stop air leaks; sealing first is what unlocks the savings.
- Never block the soffit vents. Baffles keep the airway open so the attic breathes and stays dry under the insulation.
- Don't compress batts to fit. A batt squashed into a tight bay loses much of its rated R-value — cut it to fit instead.
