Asphalt is ordered by the ton, but you lay it by area and thickness — so the job is converting volume into weight using hot-mix's density. This calculator does that conversion for a driveway or lot.
How it works
Volume in cubic feet times asphalt's ~145 lb/cu ft density, divided by 2000 lb per ton.
Volume in cubic feet is area times thickness in feet. Multiply by asphalt's density of about 145 pounds per cubic foot, then divide by 2,000 pounds per ton. Three inches of compacted asphalt is a common residential driveway thickness.
Density varies a little by mix design and aggregate, so the tonnage is a solid estimate. For a paving contract, the supplier's exact mix density refines the number.
Tons = area × (thickness ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000.
Worked examples
A 50 ft × 12 ft driveway laid 3 inches thick. → About 10.9 tons.
50 × 12 × 0.25 = 150 cu ft × 145 = 21,750 lb ÷ 2,000 ≈ 10.9 tons.
A 30 ft × 20 ft parking pad at 2 inches thick. → About 7.3 tons.
30 × 20 × 0.167 = 100 cu ft × 145 = 14,500 lb ÷ 2,000 ≈ 7.3 tons.
Tips & gotchas
- Asphalt must be laid hot and compacted fast — coordinate delivery and a roller so it doesn't cool before it's worked.
- A solid compacted gravel base under the asphalt is what makes it last; skimping on the base leads to cracking and potholes.
- Two to three inches compacted suits residential driveways; commercial lots and anything carrying trucks need more.
- Confirm the mix density with your supplier on large orders — different aggregates shift the tons-per-cubic-foot.
