Flooring is sold by the box, and boxes don't divide evenly into rooms — so the real question is how many boxes to buy, not how many square feet you have. This calculator handles the waste factor and the rounding for you.
How it works
Length × width for area, add a waste allowance, divide by box coverage, round up. Buy whole boxes — dye lots vary.
Area is length times width, but you never buy exactly that. A waste allowance covers the off-cuts at every wall, the boards ruined by a bad cut, and the inevitable plank you damage during install. Ten percent is the standard; bump to 15% for diagonal layouts or patterns where cuts are larger and more frequent.
After padding the area for waste, the calculator divides by your box's coverage and rounds up, because you can only buy whole boxes.
Boxes = (length × width × (1 + waste)) ÷ box coverage, rounded up.
Worked examples
A 12 ft × 15 ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft boxes. → 10 boxes.
12 × 15 = 180 sq ft. With 10% waste that's 198 sq ft ÷ 20 = 9.9, rounded up to 10 boxes.
An open 20 ft × 24 ft floor with 10% waste and 24 sq ft boxes. → 22 boxes.
20 × 24 = 480 sq ft. With waste, 528 sq ft ÷ 24 = 22 boxes — but a diagonal layout would push waste to 15% and add a box.
Tips & gotchas
- Buy every box from the same dye lot or run number — color and pattern shift subtly between lots, and a mismatched plank in the middle of a room is glaring.
- Keep one unopened box after the job as a repair stash; matching discontinued flooring years later is nearly impossible.
- Diagonal and herringbone layouts waste far more material — start those at 15% rather than 10%.
- Acclimate boxes in the room for a couple of days before installing so the planks expand or contract before they're locked down.
FAQ
Why can't I just buy my exact square footage?
Cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching all consume material you can't reuse. Buying the exact area guarantees a shortage and a second trip — the waste allowance exists to prevent that.
How much waste should I plan for?
Ten percent for a standard straight layout in a rectangular room, 15% for diagonals, patterns, or rooms with lots of jogs and closets that force more cuts.
What do I do with leftover boxes?
Keep at least one sealed box for future repairs. Most retailers won't take back opened boxes, and an unopened one is cheap insurance against a damaged plank down the road.
