Drywall comes in 4×8 sheets that cover 32 square feet each, and a room's walls and ceiling rarely divide evenly into them. This calculator counts the sheets you need with waste already built in.

How it works

Walls (perimeter × height) plus ceiling, times 10% waste, divided by 32 sq ft per sheet.

Wall area is perimeter times ceiling height; the ceiling adds length times width on top. The calculator applies a 10% waste factor for cuts around outlets, windows, and corners, then divides by 32 square feet per sheet and rounds up.

Sheets are heavy and awkward, so the count here is also a labor planning number — figure roughly one sheet per person-trip up the stairs.

Sheets = ((2 × (length + width) × height) + (length × width)) × 1.1 ÷ 32, rounded up.

FAQ

What thickness of drywall should I use?

Half-inch is standard for walls. Use 5/8-inch on ceilings to resist sag, and moisture- or fire-rated board where code requires it, such as garages and bathrooms.

How much joint compound will I need?

Plan on roughly one bucket of all-purpose compound per 100–150 square feet of board for a full three-coat finish, plus a roll of tape per 500 feet of seams.

Should I buy a few extra sheets?

Yes — the 10% waste factor covers normal cuts, but a single cracked sheet or a measuring mistake can leave you short. An extra sheet or two is cheap insurance against a return trip.
