Plywood and OSB come in 4×8 sheets covering 32 square feet, and almost no project divides cleanly into them. This calculator pads your area for waste and counts the sheets so you don't run short mid-job.

Waste comes from the cuts at edges, around openings, and where sheets meet at odd angles. Five percent suits a simple rectangular area; bump it for rooms with lots of jogs, closets, or angled walls.
Sheets = (area × (1 + waste)) ÷ 32, rounded up.
Worked examples
A 24 ft × 16 ft subfloor with 5% waste. → 13 sheets.
24 × 16 = 384 sq ft × 1.05 = 403 ÷ 32 = 12.6, rounded up to 13 sheets.
A 12 ft × 12 ft floor with 5% waste. → 5 sheets.
12 × 12 = 144 sq ft × 1.05 = 151 ÷ 32 = 4.7, rounded up to 5 sheets.
Tips & gotchas
- Stagger the end joints between rows like brickwork so seams don't line up — continuous seams create a weak line in a subfloor or sheathing.
- Leave a small expansion gap (about 1/8 inch) between sheets so they don't buckle when they swell with humidity.
- Choose the right grade — exterior or exposure-1 rated panels for anything that might see moisture, sanded grades only where appearance matters.
- Tongue-and-groove subfloor panels lock together for a stiffer floor but cover the same 32 square feet, so the sheet count holds.
