Before a long drive, knowing the fuel bill helps you budget and split costs fairly among everyone in the car. This calculator turns trip distance, your car's MPG, and the gas price into a clear total — and a per-person share.

How it works

Miles ÷ MPG × gas price gives the fuel cost; divide by travelers to split it.

The math is the same as everyday fuel cost: total miles divided by your MPG gives the gallons you'll burn, and gallons times the pump price gives the dollar total. Dividing by the number of travelers splits it evenly, and the tool also shows the round-trip figure so you can plan the return leg.

It covers fuel only — the biggest variable cost of a road trip. Tolls, food, and lodging aren't included, so treat this as the gas line of your trip budget rather than the whole thing.

Fuel cost = total miles ÷ MPG × gas price. Per person = fuel cost ÷ number of travelers. Round trip = fuel cost × 2.

FAQ

Does this include the cost of getting home?

The main total is one-way for the miles you enter, but the calculator also shows a round-trip figure (the total doubled). If your distance already covers the full out-and-back, use the main total instead.

How do I handle multiple drivers or cars?

For a single shared car, just split the total by the number of riders. For a caravan of separate cars, calculate each car's cost on its own and have each group cover its own fuel.

What MPG should I use for a loaded car?

Drop your normal highway MPG by roughly 5–15% if the car is fully loaded with passengers and luggage or carrying a roof box, since the extra weight and wind drag cut efficiency on a long trip.
