How it works
Counts back from wake time in 90-minute cycles plus ~15 minutes to fall asleep, so you wake between cycles rather than mid-cycle.
A full sleep cycle runs roughly 90 minutes through light, deep, and REM stages. Waking at the end of a cycle feels far easier than waking mid-cycle, even on less total sleep.
The tool adds about 15 minutes to each bedtime as a buffer for the time it takes to actually fall asleep, then offers options for 4, 5, and 6 complete cycles so you can match the night you need.
Bedtime = wake time − (number of cycles × 90 minutes + 15 minutes to fall asleep).
Worked examples
A 7:00 AM alarm, targeting 6 cycles (9 hours). → Best bedtime about 9:45 PM.
6 × 90 + 15 = 555 minutes (9h 15m) before 7:00 AM is 9:45 PM.
A 7:00 AM alarm, targeting 5 cycles (7.5 hours). → Bedtime about 11:15 PM.
5 × 90 + 15 = 465 minutes before 7:00 AM is 11:15 PM.
Tips & gotchas
- Most adults do best on 5–6 cycles (7.5–9 hours); fewer than 4 leaves a meaningful sleep debt.
- Cycle length is an average — if you consistently wake tired, shift your bedtime 15–20 minutes and find your personal rhythm.
- Keep a consistent wake time even on weekends; it stabilizes your body clock more than any single early night.
- Avoid screens and caffeine in the hour before your target bedtime so the 15-minute fall-asleep buffer holds true.
FAQ
Why count cycles instead of just total hours?
Waking at a cycle boundary, when sleep is lightest, avoids the heavy grogginess (sleep inertia) of being jolted awake during deep sleep — sometimes worth more than an extra half hour of sleep.
Is everyone's cycle exactly 90 minutes?
No — it ranges from about 80 to 110 minutes and shifts through the night. The 90-minute average is a solid starting point; adjust if you still wake groggy.
What if I can't fall asleep in 15 minutes?
The buffer is an estimate. If you regularly take longer to drift off, move your bedtime earlier by the extra time you typically need.
