Sod is sold by the pallet, and a pallet covers a fixed area, so the question is how many pallets your lawn needs once you add a little waste for trimming. This calculator converts your dimensions into pallets and square yards.
How it works
Area plus waste, divided by 9 for square yards. A pallet covers about 450 sq ft.
Area is length times width with a waste allowance added, then divided by 9 to convert square feet to square yards — the unit sod is often priced in. The calculator also divides the padded area by about 450 square feet, the typical coverage of one pallet.
Waste covers the curved edges, the trimming around beds and walkways, and the pieces that don't quite reach. Five percent is fine for a simple rectangle; add more for irregular lawns with lots of borders.
Padded area = length × width × (1 + waste); square yards = padded area ÷ 9; pallets = padded area ÷ 450, rounded up.
Worked examples
A 50 ft × 40 ft lawn with 5% waste. → 5 pallets, about 233 square yards.
50 × 40 = 2,000 sq ft × 1.05 = 2,100 ÷ 450 = 4.67, rounded up to 5 pallets. 2,100 ÷ 9 ≈ 233 sq yd.
A 30 ft × 30 ft yard with 5% waste. → 3 pallets.
30 × 30 = 900 × 1.05 = 945 ÷ 450 = 2.1, rounded up to 3 pallets.
Tips & gotchas
- Lay sod the same day it's delivered — it's a living product that yellows and dies fast on the pallet in warm weather.
- Prep and grade the soil before the pallets arrive so you're not racing the clock with sod baking in the sun.
- Stagger the seams like brickwork and butt pieces tightly; gaps dry out and invite weeds along the joints.
- Water deeply right after laying and keep it consistently moist for the first two weeks while the roots knit in.

How much area does a pallet of sod cover?
Roughly 450 square feet, though pallet sizes vary by region and grower from about 400 to 500 square feet. Confirm your supplier's coverage before ordering to avoid coming up short.
How soon do I need to install sod after delivery?
Within 24 hours, ideally the same day. Sod heats up and deteriorates on the pallet, so schedule delivery for a day you can lay it immediately.
When is the best time to lay sod?
Spring and early fall, when temperatures are moderate and the roots can establish without heat or frost stress. Avoid the peak of summer if you can't water heavily.
