Speed limits, running pace, wind reports, and boat travel all use different units depending on the country and the activity. This converter moves any speed through meters per second so mph, km/h, knots, and m/s all line up.

How it works

Speeds convert through meters per second.

Meters per second is the base, the unit physics uses. From there, the everyday units fall out: 1 mph is 0.44704 m/s and 1 km/h is 0.277778 m/s, which is why the mph-to-km/h factor works out to almost exactly 1.609.

Knots, used in marine and aviation contexts, are nautical miles per hour. One knot is 0.514444 m/s, slightly faster than 1 mph, because a nautical mile is longer than a statute mile.

Result = (value × m/s-per-source-unit) ÷ m/s-per-target-unit.

Why is 60 mph almost exactly 96.6 km/h?

Because 1 mile is 1.609344 km, multiplying any mph figure by 1.609 gives km/h. 60 × 1.609 = 96.6 km/h.

What's the quickest way to convert m/s to km/h?

Multiply by 3.6. One meter per second is 3.6 km/h, so 25 m/s is 90 km/h.

Is a knot faster than a mile per hour?

Slightly. One knot is about 1.15 mph because a nautical mile (1852 m) is longer than a statute mile (1609 m).
