Bodyweight on a US scale reads in pounds, gym plates abroad read in kilograms, and a recipe might call for grams or ounces. This converter pivots every weight through kilograms so you can move between all of them without compounding rounding errors.
How it works
Values convert through kilograms as the base unit.
Strictly these are units of mass, not weight, but in everyday use the words are interchangeable on Earth's surface. The converter uses kilograms as the base, with one pound defined as exactly 0.453592 kg and one ounce as 1/16 of that.
Stone is included for UK bodyweight, where weight is often quoted as, for example, '11 stone 6.' One stone equals 14 pounds (6.35029 kg), so converting a stone-and-pounds figure means adding them before converting.
Result = (value × kilograms-per-source-unit) ÷ kilograms-per-target-unit.
Worked examples
Convert 160 pounds to kilograms. → 72.57 kilograms
160 × 0.453592 kg per pound = 72.5747 kg.
Convert 500 grams to ounces. → 17.64 ounces
500 g = 0.5 kg, divided by 0.0283495 kg per ounce = 17.64 oz.
Tips & gotchas
- For a fast head conversion, kilograms to pounds is roughly 'double it and add 10%' — 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb, very close to the true 154.3.
- Cooking measures sometimes blur weight and volume. Grams and ounces here are weight; a 'fluid ounce' is a volume — use the Volume Converter for liquids.
- Metric tons (1000 kg) and US short tons (about 907 kg) are different. This tool uses the metric ton, so a shipping figure may need adjusting.
- When tracking bodyweight, pick one unit and stay with it. Converting back and forth introduces tiny rounding drift that can look like real change.
FAQ
How do I enter a UK weight like 11 stone 6 pounds?
Convert the pounds to a fraction of a stone first: 6 pounds is 6 ÷ 14 = 0.43 stone, so enter 11.43 stone. Alternatively enter the total in pounds (11 × 14 + 6 = 160 lb).
Is the ounce here the same as a fluid ounce?
No. This is the weight ounce (1/16 pound). A fluid ounce measures volume and only weighs one ounce for water-like liquids; use the Volume Converter for fluids.
Why does my kilogram-to-pound result differ slightly from another site?
Some tools round the pound to 0.4536 or use 2.2046 lb per kg. This converter uses 0.453592 kg per pound, the standard definition, so differences appear only in the third decimal.
