Force is measured in newtons by scientists, pound-force by US engineers, and kilogram-force in older mechanical specs. This converter takes a value in newtons and expresses it across all three, plus the tiny dyne, so spec sheets from any era reconcile.
How it works
Converts newtons to pound-force (÷ 4.448), kilogram-force (÷ 9.807), and dynes (× 100,000).
The newton is the SI base — the force that accelerates one kilogram at one meter per second squared. From there, pound-force divides by 4.448, kilogram-force divides by 9.807, and dynes multiply by 100,000.
Kilogram-force is the force gravity exerts on one kilogram at Earth's surface, which is why its factor (9.80665) is exactly standard gravity. It blurs the line between mass and force, which is precisely why the newton replaced it in science.
From newtons: lbf = N ÷ 4.448222; kgf = N ÷ 9.80665; dynes = N × 100,000.
Worked examples
Convert 100 newtons to pound-force and kilogram-force. → 22.481 lbf / 10.197 kgf
100 ÷ 4.448222 = 22.481 lbf; 100 ÷ 9.80665 = 10.197 kgf.
Convert 1 newton to dynes. → 100,000 dynes
1 N × 100,000 = 100,000 dyn (the dyne is the CGS unit of force).
Tips & gotchas
- The weight of a 1 kg object is about 9.81 newtons — that's why kilogram-force exists and equals exactly standard gravity per kilogram.
- Pound-force and pound-mass share a name but measure different things. This tool gives pound-force, the weight a one-pound mass exerts under gravity.
- Dynes are tiny (1/100,000 of a newton) and survive mostly in older physics texts and surface-tension figures.
- To get the force of a hanging mass, multiply its mass in kilograms by 9.81 to get newtons, then convert as needed.

What's the difference between a newton and a kilogram-force?
A newton is the SI unit of force; a kilogram-force is the weight of 1 kg under standard gravity, equal to 9.80665 newtons. Science uses newtons to keep mass and force distinct.
Is pound-force the same as a pound on a scale?
