Wi-Fi runs at gigahertz, audio at kilohertz, and CPUs at gigahertz too — frequency spans an enormous range, and the prefixes do the heavy lifting. This converter pivots every value through hertz, cycles per second, so any conversion is exact.
How it works
Frequencies convert through hertz as the base unit.
Hertz is the base: one cycle per second. The prefixes step up by 1000 each time — kilohertz (thousands), megahertz (millions), and gigahertz (billions of hertz).
RPM (revolutions per minute) is included because rotation is just frequency measured per minute instead of per second. One RPM is 1/60 hertz, so a 3600 RPM motor spins at 60 Hz.
Result = (value × hertz-per-source-unit) ÷ hertz-per-target-unit.
Worked examples
Convert 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to megahertz. → 2400 megahertz
2.4 × 1,000,000,000 = 2,400,000,000 Hz, divided by 1,000,000 = 2400 MHz.
Convert 3600 RPM to hertz. → 60 hertz
3600 × 0.0166667 Hz per RPM = 60 Hz (3600 ÷ 60).
Tips & gotchas
- Each metric step is a factor of 1000: 1 GHz = 1000 MHz = 1,000,000 kHz. The prefixes follow the same pattern as the rest of the metric system.
- Wi-Fi bands of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are just frequencies — 2400 MHz and 5000 MHz. The higher band is faster but shorter-range.
- Convert RPM to hertz by dividing by 60. A turntable at 33 1/3 RPM spins at about 0.56 Hz.
- Human hearing spans roughly 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz), a useful frame for audio frequencies.

How many megahertz are in a gigahertz?
Exactly 1000. The metric prefixes step by 1000, so 1 GHz = 1000 MHz = 1,000,000 kHz.
How do I convert RPM to hertz?
Divide RPM by 60, because frequency in hertz is cycles per second and RPM is cycles per minute. 3000 RPM is 50 Hz.
Is a higher-frequency Wi-Fi band always better?
Not always. The 5 GHz band carries more data but doesn't travel as far or through walls as well as 2.4 GHz. Range and speed trade off.
