How it works
Durations convert through seconds as the base unit.
Seconds are the base. The chain is fixed and clean: 60 seconds per minute, 60 minutes per hour, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week — so the multipliers compound predictably.
The 'years' option uses 31,557,600 seconds, the average Julian year of 365.25 days. That averaging accounts for leap years, so a single calendar year may be slightly shorter or longer.
Result = (value × seconds-per-source-unit) ÷ seconds-per-target-unit.
Worked examples
Convert 2 hours to minutes. → 120 minutes
2 × 3600 s = 7200 s, divided by 60 = 120 min.
Convert 1 week to hours. → 168 hours
1 week = 604,800 s, divided by 3600 s per hour = 168 hours.
Tips & gotchas
- Memorize the cornerstones: an hour is 3600 seconds, a day is 86,400 seconds, and a week is 604,800 seconds. Most time math builds on these.
- The 'years' figure averages leap years at 365.25 days. For a specific date span, count actual days rather than relying on the averaged year.
- Months aren't offered because they vary from 28 to 31 days. Convert via days for an exact span, or approximate a month as 30.44 days (year ÷ 12).
