Scheduling a call across countries means translating a time from one place to another, and the easiest reliable way to do that is to think in terms of each location's offset from UTC rather than memorizing time-zone names.
How it works
Shifts the time to UTC by removing the source offset, then applies the destination offset.
The calculator first removes the source offset to find the underlying UTC time, then applies the destination offset. This two-step approach is exactly how every time-zone conversion works under the hood and avoids the common mistake of adding offsets in the wrong direction.
Offsets west of UTC are negative (US Eastern Standard Time is UTC-5) and offsets east are positive (Central European Time is UTC+1). The calculator handles whole-hour offsets; a few zones such as India (UTC+5:30) and parts of Australia use 30- or 45-minute offsets that this version does not model.
UTC time = source time − source offset. Destination time = (UTC time + destination offset), wrapped into the 0 to 23 hour range.
Worked examples
14:00 in a UTC-5 zone, converted to UTC+1. → 20:00 at the destination (19:00 UTC)
Removing the -5 offset gives 19:00 UTC, and adding the +1 destination offset gives 20:00.
09:00 in UTC+0 (London), converted to UTC-8 (US Pacific). → 01:00 the same morning
London is already at UTC, so subtracting 8 hours lands at 01:00 Pacific time.
Tips & gotchas
- Look up each location's current UTC offset before converting; the offset changes when daylight saving time starts or ends.
- Remember the sign convention: negative for zones west of Greenwich, positive for zones east.
- If a result wraps past midnight, the calendar date at the destination also shifts forward or back by a day.
- For half-hour zones like India or Newfoundland, this whole-hour tool will be off by 30 or 45 minutes.
FAQ
Does this handle daylight saving time?
Not automatically. You enter the offsets directly, so use each location's current offset, which already reflects whether daylight saving is in effect.
How do I know if an offset is positive or negative?
Zones west of UTC (most of the Americas) use negative offsets; zones east of UTC (Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania) use positive offsets.
Why might the destination date differ?
When the converted time wraps past midnight, the day at the destination is one calendar day ahead of or behind the source.
